Welcome to Acquiring Minds, where we break down how space acquisition empowers today’s warfighter.

In the race to maintain superiority in space, our greatest asset isn't just technology. It's our people. But for decades, a wall stood between the teams who build our space systems and the teams who operate them. To outpace a rapidly evolving threat, the U.S. Space Force knew that wall had to come down.

This is the story of System and Mission Deltas—a new Space Force construct designed to tear down acquisition silos and accelerate the delivery of space-based capabilities to the warfighter.

System Deltas are the builders, each focused on a specific mission. Mission Deltas are the teams that operate the satellites, run the ground systems, monitor the space sensors and relay the data. Closing the gap between system and mission creates a continuous feedback loop. The result is a clear, consistent, and unified demand signal to the development team and the test community.

The threat is moving too fast to wait for perfect. Our acquisition teams must be in conversations every single day with their operator counterparts so that we can deliver capability in operationally relevant increments.  Because 50 or 60 or 70 percent of a solution delivered today is far more valuable than waiting months or years for a 100 percent solution.

The results are already clear. The System and Mission Delta construct was a key enabler in slashing the launch timeline for a critical GPS from 24 months to just over three. It also accelerated the delivery of FORGE, the ground system for missile warning and tracking. By embedding operators into the development process, the unified team tackled obstacles together and delivered capability faster.

In an era where victory depends on speed and integration, System and Mission Deltas ensure that the U.S. Space Force is not just prepared for the future fight, but is already ahead of the curve, delivering the tools our warfighters need to win.
